Wine Bos (Katong Village)

I spent a few nights last World Cup at Winebos at Jalan Klapa cheering on the Holland team and nursing some delightfully budget wines. It’s a nice casual place for a cheap night out and the wine selection, though limited, is generally quite palatable. When I first heard Winebos opened a new outlet at Katong Village, I was ecstatic – yay new hangout place in the east!

The new Winebos is a much bigger place compared to the Jalan Klapa outlet. There’s both al fresco and indoor seating, and the general décor here is slightly more posh. The food menu here also seems to have expanded. Other than the reliable steak which is a staple order for me, we also ordered the pork knuckle and the veal. They have a separate menu which allows us to order from the neighboring restaurants so in true gluttony fashion, we ordered some roasted pork and braised chicken (from the Hong Kong Café).

The food was generally competent and all that meat was crying out for red wine accompaniment. I picked out a 2007 Barbera d'Alba "Bricco dei Merli" which at $78 a bottle was excellent – deep ruby red, soft and velvety, bursting with sweet cherries, perfect! We were quite happily savoring our very meaty dinner.

The live band started playing at around 10pm and they were surprisingly good. Service was acceptable, it was difficult getting the wait staff at times but the boss came around and asked how we liked the food, so that was a nice touch. It’s good to know that the 1 free bottle for every two bottles purchased promotion is also available at this new outlet.

I love that I now have a new wine joint in my backyard. I am already plotting when next to lure my westie friends to the east! Can’ wait to try out the Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du pape ($108), yums.
